February 13th 2023: The largest movie theater chain in the country AMC Theaters has announced they are rolling out a new program called Sightline. The new program is similar to when you go to a concert or sporting event where you pay different prices depending where your seat is.
The new program means if you want a prime seat in the middle of the theater you will likely eventually have to pay a few dollars more than if you sit in a front row seat for example. The new program has already started in some AMC Theaters in New York, Chicago as well as Kansas City and will be active in all AMC locations by years end.
This is good for AMC and at first movie goers might not paying an extra dollar or too for prime seats but like all things the price will steadily go up. I can also eventually charging not just more per seat but then also extra for day and time; So for example a prime seat on a Friday night at 8 pm could eventually be $5 or $10 more. This variable pricing will be good for the theater companies for a while but at some point movie goers could decide to stay home to what the movie instead.
